Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Avenue The lecture seeks to trace the changing contours of the independent documentary community in China today and its polymorphous social and expressive manifestations. The independent DV documentaries produced and circulated within and beyond this community demonstrate the wide spectrum of documentary practices as well as explore the relationships between aesthetic experimentation, the ethics of representation, and political advocacy.

Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Avenue HDV/HDCam, 2007, China, independent film, 105 minutes, Narrative feature Gan Chinese (dialogue), English＆Chinese subtitles Bronze Zenith Award, First Film World Competition, 31st Montreal World Film Festival, 2007 D-Cinema Award, Barcelona Asian Film Festival, 2008 A rare Chinese satire on a society where trust, security and truth are just as scarce as genuine commodities. Old Yang sets off to unknown urban places to look for a lost condom but never finds the disturbing truth behind it. He gets abducted by officials, sleeps at a massage shop, works as a ‘sitter,’ and teaches the city people how to vote. He meets the Trust Club, a secret clique among citizens who decide to get organized and save themselves from lies and fake and harmful products. Jian Yi is an independent filmmaker, visual artist and writer currently running an IFCHINA Participatory Documentary Center in Ji’an City, Jiangxi, China. He is the producer and director of the award-winning narrative film BAMBOO SHOOTS and of the documentary SUPER, GIRLS!. Jian has worked as a filmmaker and senior art consultant for a number of European Union projects in China. In 2005-06, he partnered with premier documentary filmmaker Wu Wenguang to launch the China Villager Documentary Project. Jian's photos on China's village governance toured the nation's seven provinces as well as the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels and the European Parliament in Strasburg. He is a Yale World Fellow (’09), Starr Foundation Fellowship grantee (’07-‘08) under the New York-based Asian Cultural Council, a Fellow ('08-'10) of the India-China Fellowship at the New School, NY, USA, and a Visiting Fellow (‘07) at Cambridge University, United Kingdom. Jian is one of the three Chinese national finalists selected by the British Council for its 2007 International Young Film Entrepreneur of the Year award.
