THE YALE COLLEGE OFFICE OF FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMS (OFP)

The Yale College Office of Fellowship Programs (OFP), formerly the Office of International Education and Fellowship Programs (IEFP), advises students and alumni of Yale College about fellowships, scholarships, and grants. These awards range from full to partial funding and can support summer research, public service, independent projects and post-graduate study, in the US and abroad. The following programs related to East Asia are administered through the Yale College Office of Fellowship Programs.

Please visit the OFP Website for more information and a COMPLETE LISTING of fellowship programs available.

CHINESE CULTURAL (YUNG WING) SCHOLARSHIP
Created in memory of Yung Wing, the first Chinese student to earn a degree at Yale University, the Chinese Cultural (Yung Wing) Scholarship supports year-long study of Chinese at an approved Chinese university. The scholarship covers tuition, instructional material, housing and medical care in addition to a monthly stipend for living expenses in China. (It does not, however, include travel costs.) Eligible are undergraduate, graduating seniors, and graduate students who have completed (or will have completed by the end of spring term of this current academic year) at least one year of Yale or Yale-equivalent formal Chinese language study. Applicants must be non-Chinese nationals under the age of 30. An undergraduate recipient would need to take a Leave of Absence during the academic year of the scholarship. For more information, please visit the
OFP Website or the Yale Grants & Fellowships Website.

HENRY HART RICE FOREIGN RESIDENCE FELLOWSHIPS
The Henry Hart Rice Foreign Residence Fellowships, made possible by a generous gift from Mr. Rice, are designed to support students in the humanities and social sciences for work, research, or independent study in a country that has strained relations with the United States. Projects should involve a stay of 9-12 months and must be for purposes other than Yale academic credit. Eligible are countries of Africa, Central Asia, Eastern Europe that are not members of the European Union (EU), Turkey, the Caucasus, Russia, Latin America, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia as well as the People's Republic of China. Excluded are most of the traditional friends and allies of the U.S., including Canada, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and countries that are members of the EU. Eligible are undergraduates who have completed at least two years of course work, including graduating seniors; graduate and professional students who have permission from their Director of Graduate Studies to take a year’s leave of absence for this purpose; and graduate students at the conclusion of a terminal master’s program. The fellowship stipend will partially cover travel and living expenses in the host country; generally one award is made annually. Interested applicants may
schedule an appointment with an OFP Fellowship Adviser. Meeting with an adviser is not mandatory, but is strongly encouraged. For more information, please visit the OFP Website or the Yale Grants & Fellowships Website.

HENRY LUCE FOUNDATION
The Henry Luce Foundation annually selects fifteen to eighteen Luce Scholars in various fields to participate in one-year internships in the Far East. The Luce Scholars Program, established in 1974, is built around individual internships and work/study ararngements developed by representatives of the Asia Foundation and based on the participants' career interests, qualifications, and experience. Each Scholar spends July and August abroad studying the language of the placement country; work assignments run for approximately ten months, from September until July of the follow year. Rather than offer training for future Asia specialists, this program concentrates exclusively on providing an intensive cultural experience in Asia to young Americans from other fields who would not otherwise expect to have such an opportunity during the normal course of their careers. Placements can be made in the following countries in East and Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, China and Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

While some Scholars have been affiliated with Asian universities in teaching or research capacities, none of the participants is formally enrolled as a student in a college or university and no academic credit is offered. The range of assignments is extraordinarily broad. Although each Scholar's placement provides a professional venue and perspective, the assignments themselves should be viewed as a mechanism through which to gain a broader understanding and appreciation of the culture in which one is living. Specific placements have included an architectural firm in Tokyo, a forestry project in Indonesia, a training facility for public administration in Malaysia, a master gardener in Kyoto, a community medicine project in the Philippines, and a banking authority in Singapore. Luce Scholars receive from the Luce Foundation transportation, insurance, and a monthly stipend through the period of their participation sufficient to meet all normal expenses in Asia. Additional cost-of-living and housing allowances may be provided to participants in certain locations. Although they may occupy professional positions in Asian institutions or agencies as part of their assignment, Luce Scholars receive no compensation from their local sponsors. PEKING UNIVERSITY-YALE UNIVERSITY JOINT UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM IN BEIJING
Spend a Semester at Peking University - Earn Yale Credits - Open to All Majors - No Prior Chinese Required
A unique program designed for Yale students in partnership with China's flagship university. It began as a shared vision of Presidents Xu and Levin, who both believe in the value of joint educational opportunities in our globalizing world. This is not your typical study abroad program; rather, it is a distinctive international program for Yale students and Peking University (PKU) students to study and live together.Yale and Peking University faculty teach a varied liberal arts curriculum entirely in English (except for required Chinese language courses) to Yale students and PKU students, most of whom participate in the Yuanpei Program. With China gaining power and influence on today's political and economic scene, first-hand knowledge of China's language and culture will be a valuable asset for Yale students, and exposure to a liberal arts curriculum will be equally valuable for PKU students.
