Prior to departure from the United States, the participants of the field study took part in a three-day, comprehensive pre-departure orientation (PDO) that included intensive Chinese language classes, lectures by Yale faculty, and sessions and presentations led by previous field study participants. This combination of an academic curriculum buttressed by practical and informative sessions sufficiently prepared the participants for their month-long journey to China.
