PEKING
UNIVERSITY-YALE UNIVERSITY JOINT UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM IN
BEIJING
Spend a Semester at
Peking University - Earn Yale Credits - Open to All Majors
-
No Prior Chinese Required
A unique program designed for Yale students in partnership
with China's flagship university. It began as a shared vision
of Presidents Xu and Levin, who both believe in the value
of joint educational opportunities in our globalizing world.
This is not your typical study abroad program; rather, it
is a distinctive international program for Yale students and
Peking University (PKU) students to study and live together. Yale and Peking University
faculty teach a varied liberal arts curriculum entirely in
English (except for required Chinese language courses) to
Yale students and PKU students, most of whom participate in
the Yuanpei
Program. With China gaining power and influence on today's
political and economic scene, first-hand knowledge of China's
language and culture will be a valuable asset for Yale students,
and exposure to a liberal arts curriculum will be equally
valuable for PKU students. For more information about this program, please visit:

EAST ASIAN LANGUAGE CONSORTIA
THE INTER-UNIVERSITY CENTER FOR CHINESE
LANGUAGE STUDIES AT TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY
The Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies
(IUP) operates the oldest and most rigorous
foreign-based Chinese language training program in China.
The Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University is a
member of this consortium. IUP, formerly known as the 'Stanford Center,' is now in its 11th year in Beijing on the campus of Tsinghua University. IUP was originally established in Taipei, Taiwan in 1963 and in 1997 relocated to its current site in Beijing. IUP is the premier U.S.-sponsored Chinese language program intended for students who aspire to truly advanced competence, whether they be undergraduates, graduates, professionals, or established scholars.
IUP's mission is to raise students'
Chinese language proficiency to a level at which they they can function
independently in professional or academic careers. Recent IUP graduates who have chosen to pursue careers in China have proven that their IUP-acquired linguistic skills have enabled them to function successfully in such areas as business consulting, management, public relations, law, education and journalism. Prerequisites
include the equivalent of two years of college level Mandarin
by the application deadline and an excellent academic or professional
record. Our current teacher-student ratio is 1:3.
All IUP instructors hold the PRC National Certificate for
Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, and many hold MA degrees
from leading universities in China. IUP continues to be the most intensive and cost effective Chinese language program available to intermediate and advanced students worldwide. Compared with other well-known language programs in Beijing, IUP remains the most economical program when considering its low teacher-student ratio and highly effective methodology. No other program guarantees
this ratio for group classes and a one-hour daily private
tutorial for less than IUP's current program fees. Classes
on classical Chinese, newspaper reading, business Chinese,
and special topics of interest to the individual student are
offered.
Programs: 8-week (160 hours) Summer Intensive Courses (mid-June through
mid-Aug); 16-week (320 hours) Semester Option (Fall or Spring); 32-week
(640 hours) Academic Year Program (September through June)
