FELLOWSHIPS
AND RESEARCH SUPPORT
THE COUNCIL ON EAST ASIAN STUDIES
AT YALE UNIVERSITY (CEAS)
Each year the Council on East Asian Studies
at Yale University awards Summer
Language Mini-Grants of up to $6,000 to help
offset the costs of advanced language training in Chinese,
Japanese and Korean, enabling Yale students to conduct research
using primary source materials or to meet specific language
requirements. The Council also offers Summer
Travel & Research Grants of between $1,500
and $8,000, given primarily to support field research, or
other forms of pre-dissertational preparation with a focus
on China, Japan or Korea. For Yale students who need funds
for a research year abroad, the Council offers
Dissertation Research Grants which are
designed to match the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for
International and Area Studies at Yale (MacMillan Center)
Dissertation Research Fellowship. Yale University undergraduate
and graduate students are also eligible to apply for the Charles
Kao Fund Research Grants for summer research
projects relating to East and Southeast Asia that focus primarily
on technology transfer processes between and among East and
Southeast Asian and Western countries.
The deadline for all
2012-2013 Council on East Asian Studies administered grants
is Friday, February
8, 2013. All applications must be submitted ON-LINE through the Yale Student Grants & Fellowships Database.
The Council on East Asian Studies also receives and makes
available information about internships and fellowships from
non-Yale and foreign organizations. The Council posts such
announcements on bulletin boards located outside its office
on the third floor of Henry R. Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Avenue.
Aside from research fellowship information, the Council also
posts details of numerous language study and study abroad
programs which are usually open to both undergraduate and
graduate students.
Students who wish to go abroad for the coming summer should
arrange their travel plans well in advance, since competition
for the limited funding that is available for these programs
can be tough and most of these applications are due as early
as February each year.
